Thoughts from a Dad on Father's Day

Happy Father’s Day readers! I hope that this Father’s Day finds you well and prepared to celebrate! Becoming a dad last year was the single most defining moment of my life outside of meeting my wife. I have never felt more challenged, fulfilled and purpose-driven before in all of my life.

Right now our son Henry is curled up falling asleep next to me and all I can think of is how I don’t want a tie, or a pair of socks, or a fancy grill. I just want the memories that we will build together. I want to remember teaching him to tie his own tie, to put on his own socks and to make his own food.

I feel so blessed to have an amazing photographer for my wife. Hardly an hour goes by when she isn’t snapping photos and videos of us playing and learning new things. Photography is a gift that might be simple but it is so much more than a pair of socks or a new tie.

A picture of your family can go a long way for a father.

It’s a reminder of what he works for.

Of what is truly important in his life.

So how do we get those great Dad photos?

We’ll here’s a few tips from a photographers husband and dad.

  1. Try to incorporate a theme that your dad will like!

  2. Have a plan! Dads often prefer to be behind the camera instead of in front of it, so if you and the kids have a plan for what photos you want to capture it will make it that much more special!

  3. Candid Shots are gold! In my experience, the best photos of me and Henry aren’t posed. They’re completely natural and in the moment shots of the interaction between us. You can see the love and joy bursting out of the photo. And that’s what we want to remember, those little moments filled with smiles and laughter. That’s the best gift a father can ask for.

Last year, I spent my first Father's Day giving my son his first bath. This year, I plan on spending as much time as possible with my two favorite people and enjoying a home cooked meal.

How are you celebrating Father’s Day?
