The Mom Series: Magic in Maternity Portraits
The Mom Series: Magic in Maternity Portraits.
Toss the confetti, for the next few weeks we’re celebrating moms!!! From bump, to baby, to sitter’s, first birthdays, and so much more!
This week, we’re celebrating the bump! You may have had friends and family ask you “are you going to get pictures done of the baby bump?” You may be saying to yourself, “I don’t have time to take pictures, there is too much to get ready!” or “why get professional pictures done of my bump when I have everything else to get for baby.” Or if anyone is like me, I had interesting swelling, so I could not wear my cute footwear. On the positive side, this caused me to have to make a trip to the store to by new shoes which is a beloved past time of mine!
Trust me, I know what all of those feelings are and I do this for a living! But for me, my maternity photos were a way to celebrate the bond I was developing with the little man I hadn’t even met yet. When I look back at those photos, I don’t think about my fluffy feet that turned into sausages. I don’t think about the nervousness and anxiety I felt during that time especially driving in lake effect snow. I think about the tremendous blessing that my child has been to me and how those kicks made me smile and crave lots of Panera and gummy bears!
Here are my Top 5 reasons to have a maternity shoot.
Looking Your Best!
Part of maternity sessions is finding clothes that make you look and feel fabulous while showing off that bump. When I have consultations with my clients before their maternity sessions I ask a few questions.
Do you have any dresses or clothing in mind for your session? If not, I send my client a list of my favorite places to shop for maternity wear from Amazon to Strut Boutique. I love recommending Strut Boutique because Ashley helps style clients in outfits that make them feel their best. She did this for me and my maternity session. You will see a photo at the end of this blog.
I also have a few items in the studio for clients to wear, like this fun black blazer that’s got Aalyiah looking fierce and fabulous!
Making The Dream A Reality!
Maternity sessions also give opportunities for mind blowing effects. This shot was composited out of several shots of the dress being swished around to make it look like MAGIC! This right here is my latest OBSESSION! I currently have a growing collection of fabrics in the studio I use to get these effects for my client’s I’m looking to grow this style collection of maternity photos. I’m calling this collection “ Flight of Love”
Celebrating Your Journey
Obviously a maternity shoot is going to revolve around the Mommy-to-be and the Bump but let’s not forget Dad! We also encourage to get shots with fathers or other significant others to celebrate your dedication and excitement you share knowing your baby is weeks away from making their debut!
Capturing a Moment
ALL of photography is about capturing moments and preserving them. With Maternity Sessions, you’re capturing a very special and very fleeting moment. Once your child enters the world, they’re never going to be that bump again (thank God! That would hurt!). They’re going to grow up and become their own sort of special person. In this moment of carrying your baby, you’re developing a bond with someone who you don’t know yet but will be guiding and loving for the rest of your life. There will never be a moment between you and this child exactly the same.
Sharing Your Joy
A lot of maternity clients come to the studio wondering what to do with their maternity photo. I have client’s that purchase prints for families and some that are over the moon excited about the Folio box. The folio box is wonderful for maternity session comes with your childs name embossed in the front, a customized inner panel, and prints in the book. Most clients print a few maternity, and use the box to collect prints as the baby grows.
My Maternity Photos
When I was pregnant, I had a lot of fun with my photos. From week 24-week 39, I created a photo each week inspired by album covers. Below was my first of the series followed by a beautiful photo of my family by my good friend Ryan Grant of Ryan Grant Photography & Videography. Ryan and his wife Haley are expecting their first little one this summer. They already share so much love for their baby. I’m so excited for this incredible pair and thankful for Ryan for capturing photos of me, my hubby, and my crazy fur babies.
Mom’s, what’s your favorite thing about Pregnancy?
My Favorite thing was hearing my babies heartbeat for the first time,
and the first time my husband got to feel our baby Henry dancing in my belly.
